Take Images on TV with a Camera

Why can't we get a clear picture when we take images on TV screen with a camera? The television image consists of 525 horizontal lines which are called scanning line. The scanning lines move in a pair. These, odd and even numbered lines, alternately come up every a sixtieth second on the screen. A perfect image of television is made every a thirtieth second. The New Human Sized Robot can Get Up and Lie Down

On August 19, the National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) and Kawada Industries jointly announced that they successfully developed a human sized robot that could get up and lie down like a human being for the first in the world. They introduced the new robot "HRP2 Prototype" to the media at the AIST. The robot, 154 centimeters in height and 58 kilos in weight, smoothly produced a sequence of movements: The robot lay on the stomach from standing position, stood up again, lay on the back and stood up again. In the past, there was small robots less than 60 centimeters in height that had a function to get up and lie down. But, human sized robots over 120 centimeters in height then couldn't do those movements. This was because it was difficult to strike a balance between gravitational and inertial forces when the robots moved.

HRP2 overcome weakness that the old human sized robots had before. To keep a balance, it has an inboard battery and a new developed software that enables the robot to determine a position of the center of gravity, adding parts to move freely like joint on the hips. Thanks to those functions, the robot was freed from the restriction of "There is no excuse for only one failure (falling)" and will increase a range of its activities.ff

The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST, Tsukuba City, Ibaraki) and Kawada Industries (Kita-ku, Tokyo) jointly announced on August 19 that they successfully developed a human-sized robot capable of getting up, lying down and the like for the first time in the world. Among smaller types of robots measuring less than 60 cm, there have already been some robots capable of getting up from a lying position. The force of inertia generated concurrently with their movement, however, has made it difficult for life-size robots (taller than 120 cm) to balance, thus disallowing the robot to get up. They overcame the difficulty by having the HRP2 have batteries built-in thereby to give greater joint flexibility around the waist and by developing the software to effectively control the position of the center of gravity. Freed from the pressure of even a single failure cannot be allowedh, robots are now expected to expand their sphere of activities.

The robot showed a sequence of smooth action that it stood, lay on its face, rose, lay face upward and rose. Some less than or equal to 60 cm robots can rise. But more than or equal to 120 cm robots cannot rise because they are difficult to balance due to big inertia force in rising. The HRP2 robot with a built-in battery has some joints and a waist which can freely move. In addition the robot can adequately control its barycentric position by new software. These new devices allowed the robot to solve the above problem. Generally speaking, robots must not fall down under any circumstance to do their assignment. As the HRP2 robot overcame this limitation, it will extend the scope of robot's activities.

"Fall to the Ground ? No Problem ! Human-Sized Robot to Sit Up"

On 19th August, National Institute of the Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST, Tsukuba City, Ibaraki) and Kawata Kogyo (Kita-ku, Tokyo) announced the success to make a human-sized robot which sit up and lie down under their control for the first time in the world.

On this day, they exhibited the robot "HRP2 proto-type" to journalists at AIST. The robot is 154 centimeters in height and 58 kilograms in weight. It appeared having posture of standing upright. Then it repeated a series of movements to lie on its face, to sit up, to lie on its back, and to sit up smoothly.

Indeed there have been robots which sit up, but they were small, below 60 centimeters in height. When the height of the body of robot exceed 120 centimeters as tall as human, the inertia over the control operates on moving parts of the body in movements. Therefore it was difficult to balance the body.

AIST and Kawata Kogyo overcome this difficult point by the following ways: they equipped the body of the HRP2 with built-in battery ; they fitted the parts of the HRP2, such as waist, with pieces moving joint-like freely; they produced a new soft wear to control the center of gravity of the body properly.

Makers of robots have aimed to make robots absolutely not to fall to the ground. But this aim have imposed restrictions on the makers. The success of this time released the makers from the restrictions. Henceforth the kinds of works robots can do will increase.

"This Human-Size Robot Can Lie Down and Stand up"

The National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (Tukuba City, Ibaragi Prefecture) and Kawata Industries Inc. (Kita ward, Tokyo) announced on August 19 that they succeeded in making a human life-size robot that could stand up and lie down for the first time in the world.

On that demonstration day, a hHRP2 Prototypeh robot, 154 centimeters tall and 58 kilograms in weight, showed a series of smooth movements of lying down from an upright position, lying on its stomach and standing up, then lying on its back and standing up again. In the past, some robots that were shorter than 60 centimeters could stand up from a lying position, but robots that were taller than 120 centimeters could not stand up smoothly because they had difficulty in balancing the body due to the larger inertia they created when they tried to stand up .

HRP2 overcame this problem by having the butteries built in the body, adding joints to some parts of the body such as the lower back to give more mobility, and installing newly developed software that controlled the center of gravity properly. The success of this robot seems to make researchers free from the limitation that gDonft let robots fall downh and enable them to give a wider range of tasks to robots.

On August 19, the National Industrial Research Institute in the Tsukuba City, Ibaraki and Kawada Industries in the Kita Ward, Tokyo jointly announced that they had succeeded in, for the first time in the world, making a human-size robot that can lie down and get up.

The robot is called the HRP2 Prototype and measures 154 cm in height and 59 kg in weight. On the day of announcement, the robot demonstrated that it could smoothly complete a series of movements such as lying down on its stomach from an upright position, standing up, lying down on its back, and standing up again.

In the past, some smaller robots of less than 60 cm in height could get up from a lying position. But no robot of more than 120 cm in height could not get up, because it could not control a large amount of inertia from the movement and went out of balance.

The HRP2 could overcome this problem by introducing new innovations including an internal battery, flexible joints at the waist, and a new software to control the center of gravity of the robot. This robot will be free from the restrain that robots cannot recover from a fall, and will expand an area of potential applications of robots.

"Internationalization of Hiroshimah

With the advent of the 21st century, today we see the swirl of globalization becoming even greater engulfing the international community. On the one hand, the interdependence among nations has been deepening in every aspect of society and economy. On the other hand, many global challenges are emerging including environment disruption, food shortage, energy crisis, poverty in developing countries and increasing regional conflicts. These problems urge us to take measures such as reinforcement of international cooperation and establishment of a mechanism to facilitate such cooperation.
