The Squid Rice, a local specialty sold at JR Mori Station in Hokkaido, has set a monumental record of having maintained the first place for 35 years in a row in the number of units sold at "The 40th Festival of Box Lunches Sold at Railway Stations" currently being held at the Shinjuku Branch of Keio Department Store in Tokyo.

 

A total of 23,000 units have been sold during the first five days of the festival starting January 13th. The staff of the department store estimate that more than 60,000 units will be sold by the 25th, the last day of the festival. The secret of popularity is the salty-sweet taste of a cooked squid stuffed with sticky rice which is reminiscent of old days as well as the reasonable price of 470 yen. It seems that the squid rice will continue to enjoy the status of being the king of box lunches sold at railway stations for some time to come.
