Japanese adults had not read a bookですね。

They had no troubles in their life.

The Washington Post, the New York Timesというようにtheが付きます。

According to a survey by the Yomiuri Newspaper, more than half of Japanese adults ~, または A survey by the Yomiuri Newspaper found that ~というように表現できます。

3.       Have not read a book for the last monthは「たまたま一月はど本を読まなかった(ふだんは読んでいるのだが)」という意味にも取れます。Have not read any book for the last one monthとすると「ここ一月本をまったく読まなかった」となります。

またhaving no trouble caused by not readingは二重否定になっています。

According to a survey conducted by the Yomiuri Newspaper Company~
